Dan: "Jason and I had a bunch of fun recording this one! It is a kind of acoustic rocker, embibed with a lot of bitterness and humour, and confirming my Grumpy Old Man status! We recorded the "audience" in the studio. Basically loads of overdubs of applause from the two of us.
It's a protest song of sorts, criticising humankind's insistence that image and looks are more important than our souls and our personalities. The coda "I got it hanging out my trousers" refers to the chill I got in my back hanging my washing out to dry on a windy day! And Big Hearts Mean Big Bellies is the title of a dating agency for the larger man!
Jason says: "This was the last track we recorded out of the 20 'Stantonbury' tunes, and by this time I was completely knackered and couldn't face starting the song from scratch, so I told Dan to play it live in one take.
We added the crowd and backing vocals straight after the main take. I put the bass and the solo on later. A great way to end the recording sessions because we were having so much fun after all the serious business was done."
